Fact is Propecia side effects are not very nice for men. A new study conducted and published July 12, 2012 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that sexual dysfunction side effects may be long lasting even after patients stop using these prescription medications. Researchers from George Washington University surveyed 54 men under age 40, who reported experiencing side effects for three months or longer after they stopped taking the most prescribed medication for hair loss, Propecia. Male patients reported sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, trouble having an orgasm, and shrinking and or painful genitals. Understanding Hair Loss Side Effects
In the same study conducted by the George Washington University, 96% of men experienced sexual problems that lasted more than a year after they finished using Propecia. None of the men had sexual, medical or psychiatric complaints before starting the drug. Dr. Michael S. Irwig, lead author of the study, told ABC News , “Our findings make me suspicious that this drug may have done permanent damage to these men. The chances that they will improve I think is lower and lower the longer they have these side effects.” According to ABC News, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) approved Propecia to treat male baldness back in 1997. Clinical trials revealed a few instances of sexual dysfunction, but subsequent data found more frequent occurrences.
Unfortunately, subsequent data suggest that such problems may be more prevalent than previously imagined. The FDA received over 400 reports of Propecia sexual dysfunction over 13 years, nearly 60 of which reported that the Propecia side effects lasted longer than three months after the men stopped taking the drug. Here’s a quick history of Propecia side effects. In 2011, the FDA mandated that the drug label for Propecia include a warning about long lasting erectile dysfunction. In April 2012, the FDA updated the label to include warnings about libido, ejaculation and orgasm disorders.
